Quilt Festival Time!

This is always one of my favorite posts to write.  It happens twice a year... the Bloggers' Quilt Festival!

Sometimes I share a new quilt, sometimes it's an older quilt.  Today, I'm sharing my current favorite.

Tide Pools

Made from my stash of Heather Ross' Mendocino, this quilt took me well over a year to complete.  No, not because it's so complex, hand pieced, or hand quilted.  Really just because it kept getting put on the back burner for other quilts.  Once I finished this quilt, it quickly became one of my favorites.

The rounded corners...

I backed it with a vintage sheet that is so wonderfully soft.

The quilting started with conference call inspiration.  Don't you just love it when inspiration comes to you at odd times?  Somehow a rousing discussion about international economies translated into the quilting design...

The quilting is free motion and I just winged it as I went to mimic the randomness of the sea.

Thank you for visiting today!  I hope you will head over here to see all the beautiful and inspiring quilts in the festival.  It's so easy to get sucked in for hours so don't say that I didn't warn you!

The X Factor

Chaney stuck to the velcro wall.  Quite possibly the most awesome carnival attraction ever...

So here's the last piece of what I've been up to and the main way that I've been taking time to take care of myself.

For the past month, I've had a fairly nice looking guy coming into my living room at 5 am each morning.  He tells me what workouts to do, that I'm doing a great job, and to "bring it".  Anyone know who I'm talking about?  No, not Steve... he makes appearances in the living room but it's more to see what I'm up to. :)

Yep, I've been doing P90x.  I begin my 5th week tomorrow so I figure I'm good to blog about it now since I'm past the habit forming stage.  This has been one of things that I've been dying to talk about but I needed these first weeks to make the change for me and no one else.  Plus, you would have heard A LOT of moaning and complaining about how unbelievably sore I have been.

I have almost toppled over on more than one occasion at work, on the softball field, going down stairs, getting in and out of my car...

I've also been tired but it's a good tired.  Working out 6 days a week for at least an hour a day is the best sleeping pill in the world.  I haven't had insomnia in over a month.  The plus, I feel better.  The downside, I used to sew when I couldn't sleep.

Steve and Chaney have been super supportive.  Chaney thinks that it's all yoga and she's partially right.  There is one yoga workout that is 90 minutes long.  I used to laugh at yoga thinking that it's just some stretching and meditating.  Wow.  I was so wrong.  I'm pretty athletic but out of all the workouts, yoga is the one that kills me each and every time.  So if you practice yoga on a regular basis, my hat's off to you because it's no joke!

I'm pretty sure the funnel cake won...

This has been a fun change for me, Steve and Chaney.  Other than the State Fair... they have embraced the change in our meals and that has been awesome.  And of course, Steve has lost weight by just changing his diet.  Of course, not killing himself every morning like me yet he's seeing great results too.  Men...!

PS: please be rest assured, you won't be seeing pics of me in a bikini on here showing my before and after results.  I'm That Girl but not that girl. ;)

Fail {2011}

I have a new banner!

Note to self: spellcheck won't catch "fail" instead of "fall"...

Further note to self: if I'm using spellcheck for the word "fall" then maybe I have bigger problems...

Let's hope that the winter banner is easier to make.  At least if I misspell "winter" I have the hope of spelling "winner" instead.

In case you would like to make a banner for your blog using correctly spelled words, you can find my tutorial here.  :)

Happy fall, ya'll!

Remember me?  Do I look familiar??  No?  I'm pretty much the worst blogger...

Actually that's Chaney and I have a feeling that it won't be too much longer before she starts censoring my blog so I figured I should publish this picture before she gets any older.

I've always been pretty open about things here so when I started feeling stressed out and quiet; I didn't feel like I had anything good to say.  That's probably not the truth but that's how it felt.

So what have I been up to?  Lots.

Looking back, during Chaney's last school year, I struggled a lot with enormous amounts of stress that led to depression and I was determined not to do that again.  I haven't avoided it this time around but I did do some things differently.  Did you know that September is one of the most common months for people with depression to start spiraling?  Something about the changing amounts of daylight, blah, blah, blah...

So with that knowledge, I took some proactive steps.  For lack of a better description, I hunkered down.  I made a list of what was important {not in any particular order} and I stuck to these things:

1. My health
2. Steve, Chaney & all the activities that come with them...
3. Church/home
4. Work
5. Refusing to let other people's bad decisions control my every move.

Notice what's missing?  Yep.  Sewing, fabric, taking pictures, blogging, etc.  Now, I've still been sewing some but it hasn't been at the typical 100 MPH pace I like to hold myself to.  I've missed reading blogs and blogging a lot but guess what... it's all still here. :)

And guess what also happened?  The school year is off to a great start.  Coaching softball is fun and not draining.  Our house is more organized.  Lunches for all three of us are getting made during the week.  I've enjoyed my time with Steve & Chaney instead of feeling the constant pull towards my studio.  And most importantly, I'm healthier.

That last one... it took me a long time to figure out that my health {physical, mental, spiritual, etc} is important.  What I thought was being selfless was actually closer to selfish;  I have always put myself last and in turn, it affected everyone.  Now I know this isn't any sort of earth-shattering revelation and I bet most of you already know what it took me all this time to learn but better late than never, right??

So I have lots of things to share!  There's been lots going on in our house and I can't wait to catch up with everyone.  Thanks to all of you for your kind emails, comments and for sticking around while it's been quiet!

I'm back and feeling rejuvenated!  I promise that I'll make it up to ya'll... :)

First order of business: update my blog some because it's clearly not summer anymore...
