I spend a lot of my week days sketching and dreaming about new projects and then I sew a lot on the weekends. I adore weekend projects that I can complete and smile about all week long so...
...welcome to
where I will share a tutorial or project every Friday that can be completed in a weekend {or less} so that your weekend can be as stitchn' as mine. :)
And because I'm not that creative, I will also be looking for guest bloggers to share projects so email me if you are interested.
Every Monday I'll be posting and giving ya'll the chance to link up and show off your weekend projects. So grab the button from my sidebar and let's get started!
Weekend # 1: Half Square Triangles {That Girl Style}
I really like the look of half square triangles {HST's} and if there is a fast way to whip them up, 4 at a time, then I'm all about that.
I was playing quilt late one night when I put two layer cake squares {10" squares} together and started thinking about geometry. Yeah, I know. Nerd.
But in my nerd-ness here's what I came up with... 4 HST's from two layer cake squares with no measuring, line drawing, or pinning. This probably isn't an original technique but here's how I did it:
With a 1/4" seam allowance, stitch all the way around the perimeter of the squares.
Make sure to stop a 1/4" from each edge and with your needle down, raise your presser foot. Turn your fabric and begin stitching down the next side. Repeat until you have all 4 sides stitched.
Yes, I know that your squares are completely sewn together... don't worry!

Take your sewn together square to your cutting mat. Cut diagonally, corner to corner, in one direction. Rotate your pieces together and cut diagonally the other direction.
Open them up, press and you will have 4 HST's that measure 6.5" inches square.
Square up to 6.5" and you are done!
Repeat the above steps two more times to make the zig zag table runner.
Need a different size? Add 3.5" to your desired finished HST size to come up with the size squares you need.
For example: two 8.5" squares stitched together = four 5" HST's
two 9" squares = four 5.5" HST's

Once you have all your HST's arrange them as shown. My friend Randi has some other awesome ways to arrange HST's too.
Stitch the squares together and then the rows together paying attention to the seams... HST's always look better when the seams match up.
Press your seams and then baste, quilt, and bind like this or this!

Great idea! :)
Ok, just have to say you may of just saved my life! I've been working on a half triangle square quilt for a few months now and laid it out tonight to discover I'm only 2/3rds of the way done with it when I ran across this. I had been cutting 5 inch squares, cutting in half, sewing, trimming down to 4 inches and so on... wow! I think I just got wind in my sails to finish!!!
Awesome tutorial! I have to try that!
That's awesome!
what a great idea! and a fun name for it! :)
This is great. I started a baby quilt a while back and wish I had seen this first. I might not have left it unfinished for so long. I will remember this for next time! Thanks for sharing all your wonderful ideas!
I saw a video on youtube once that showed it this way too- SO smart!
The one part that confuses me (and that's not hard to do, mind you) is how to know what size to start with in order to end up with a certain size HST... I may be over thinking this, but I already cut out some squares and started on a zig zag quilt - when I saw this technique I thought "AWESOME!" but then my zigs would be too small. Oh well, maybe I'll put on my math hat and try to figure out what size to start with NEXT time to end up with 5" HSTs! :) Thanks for sharing!
That is so tricky! I never would have thought of that, and I too really like the look of HSTs. Thanks so much for the idea.
I have seen several ways to do hst's. I must say this is one of the best. I think I will try it with my charm squares. Thanks for posting this.
Super useful - thank you so much!
I use the same technique to make pinwheels!
You are a genius!!!
Thank you for telling me about adding 3.5" to get my desired size block. I would have never figured that out by myself. Thanks!
What a great idea - I do a lot of stitching on the weekends, too. Will put my thinking cap on re: projects to share.
I have yet to try that HST method but I hear it is most accurate, probably because you're never sewing on the bias.
Omg you are a genius! Thank you a million times for posting this!
oh my WORD!! this is awesome. you've totally revolutionized my thinking on HSTs. I have a charm pack to dig into now... bwahahahahaaa.. :)
I certainly will try this because I have an idea that requires gazillion of HSTs. Thanks, Jennifer. I was awful at math so I'm glad to have a friend with a math brain. Thanks!
Cool idea! Thank you so much for sharing.
Brilliant! Thanks!
This is such a smart idea! Thanks so much for sharing!!!!!!!!!!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!! All I can say is shut up (in a good way) I never would have thought this would work.
This tutorial came just in time as I was getting ready to work on the HST portion of a quilt this weekend. I used your method and had quick and beautiful results. Thanks a bunch!
Love the zig zag. Great fabrics
Great minds think alike ...
Even the idea of printing books (instead of copying them by hand) came at the same time in two different minds (Johann Gutenberg, Mainz (DE), 1456 but also Laurens Janszoon Coster, Haarlem (NL), in 1423)
Have you seen this tutorial:

They're really good, too.
Great idea! I'm going to try it with some charms this weekend. Also grabbed your button for week-end stitching!
Kiera
very clever! thanks for sharing!
Jennifer, I wish I had found your site a week ago so much easier then drawing the cutting line and seaming both sides before cutting out your half square triangles. I will definitely use your method in the future. Thank you for posting this.
