Sneak peek of what's ahead...
I'm posting the upcoming week's instructions a day early because of Blogger's Quilt Festival tomorrow. Are you participating?? You should! It's tons of fun!
Are you ready to cut into your beautiful fabrics? Don't be scared...
I used to have major anxiety about cutting fabric but a few simple tips will cut down any nervousness:
- Get acquainted with your ruler, your mat, and your rotary cutter. Try cutting a few pieces with fabric that doesn't matter.
- Measure twice. Cut once. Take your time! Before you go cutting ALL your fabric; cut enough for one block and make sure your pieces are right.
- If you make a mistake... breathe. Most mistakes can be fixed.
For the inner border around your charm square:
- Take your 1 yard of white {or neutral} fabric and cut it into strips that measure 44" x 1.5". You should be able to get 24 strips out of your 1 yard.
- From these strips, take 10 of them and cut 80 5" x 1.5" rectangles.
- From the remaining strips, cut 80 7" x 1.5" rectangles
- Take your 2 yards of your solid color fabric and cut it into strips that measure 44" x 2". You should be able to get 36 strips from the 2 yards.
- Take 12 of these strips and cut 80 7" x 2" rectangles.
- Take
10{oops} 20 of the remaining strips and cut 80 10" x 2" rectangles.
It's not too late to join either! Here is the link to Week 1... :)

Hey Jennifer,
I have a question. What are the dimensions of the finished block? Is it 6.5 inches square? I want to make a baby sized quilt, so I'm trying to decide how many blocks I want to make. Thanks!
Ahh! Hope my fabric comes in the mail today!!! I am excited Jennifer, this is my first quilt-along..
Ah...I agree about the cutting...I hate that part! =) Since my back hurts today, I'm going to start another day. =) Do you have a tip for a ruler that slips as soon as I start to cut? It ticks me off!
AMKreations - I use a Gypsy Gripper with my ruler. It's basically handle that suctions to the ruler so you get better leverage. It has made a huge difference for me.
I am still waiting for my yards of kona to arrive :(
My charm pack has only 30 so I will adjust accordingly. I think it will still be big enough.
Looking forward to following along.
Thanks again for the inspiration.
xoxo
I would love to join this! I will be getting caught up this week. This is my very first quilt a long! :) So excited!
I think I'm going to cheat and use a jelly roll for the 2nd colour. Would it being 2.5" throw it out too much?
Excited!
I only discovered your link today but I'm IN! I'm going to use stash fabrics as my charm squares and see what I can conjure up as far as solids go, may have to buy some homespun (no kona in town).
