| My fabrics... Moda Swell charms, Kona Snow, & Kona Lake |
I'm so excited for everyone to be joining me! This is going to be a lot of fun whether you are a brand new quilter or even an advanced quilter. Will your quilt be perfect? Nah. Will you love it? I sure hope so... :)
This week we need to gather our fabric and supplies. I promised to keep this as basic as possible for the new quilters so feel free to read ahead if you already have your quilting supplies. Here are the basic supplies:
- rotary cutter & self healing cutting mat
- a quilter's ruler {a 6"x24" works well}
- scissors
- seam ripper {grrr...}
- thread in a neutral color {I like Gutermann}
- a basic sewing machine
- iron & ironing board
- hand sewing needle
- straight pins
- fabric marking pen/pencil
Charm packs are great because you get a whole line of fabric {approx 42 squares} for around $8. A charm square is 5"x5" and is easy to work with in a lot of different projects.

I plan to put a white border around each of my charm squares, add some wonkiness, and then add a larger border of color. You can vary this however you would like. I will need approximately 1 yard of white and 2 yards of light blue.
I use Kona solids. Please don't confuse Kona with broadcloth if you are in a store like Joann's. Broadcloth does not wash or hold up well. Trust me on this one. :(
When selecting your fabrics, you want the charms to "pop", float in the neutral border, and then have a nice contrast to the larger border fabric. That's my vision at least. You could easily reverse this and have the color border your charm and then white be your larger border.
If you have any questions selecting your fabrics or about the quilt along in general feel free to post here or send me an email! I have also set up a Flickr group so we can share our progress, ask questions, and have some fun getting to know each other.
Happy fabric shopping!!
P.S. My blog button on the left sidebar is working now! Feel free to grab it and invite your friends to quilt along with us :)
To clarify... this quilt will measure approximately 54" x 63" and yes, it will use all 42 charm squares. My sketch didn't include all 42 squares... I was a little tired and cross-eyed after a late softball game. ;)

Hey Jennifer!
Any idea on an approximate finished size. Also, are we using all the charms (looks like only about 1/2 in your sketch.) Thanks!
Ack! I'm headed to Joanne right NOW, but I have questions. EEP! (I have to go now, otherwise I won't be home by the time the kids get off the bus)
I don't have access to charm packs unless I order online, and I hate to pay shipping, lol, so by my calculations, 4 FQs is enough for 40ish charm squares. Did I calc right?
What's a good alternative to Kona from Joanne's? I guess they can help me out, huh?
Wish me luck! LOL. Sorry if I seem dense.
Cool design! I love the way the framed charms are floating in a wonky way inside the solid borders. I just got my package from Fat Quarter Shop of a few new sets of charm squares. Now I need to check my solid stash.
I have a question, when are you going to post the first week of instructions?
I'm one of those poor souls who has to spend hours in the car to get to a quilt shop, or must order online. I hate to be behind before I can even get started. Right now I only have charms and a neutral fabric. How much time do we have to get our ingredients together?
Can't wait to go shopping for the fabrics! Thanks so much for inviting me! I am really excited. My biggest problem is who I am going to give the quilt to. Maybe it will be for ME!
I am going to try this to. I was just wondering what to do with the millions of charm packs I have. Thanks for inviting me.
Terri-
I got a sweet charm pack I've been dying to use and this quilt looks like it's the ticket! I've got three babies to make quilts for and this will be perfect for one :)
I think I will join in and make it really wonky by using up all the left over charm squares from projects that didn't use the whole pack!! Yeah!
I'm in!! This will be my first quilt-along - and I'm excited to join in. Now I've just got to order that fabric!

I joined the flickr group and just uploaded photos! This will be fun...I just need a marking something now. =)
?!?!?!? I've been thinking. LOL I like this design. But I have no charm squares. I do have a great 2 metres of a large scale classy print and 1 metre of a suitable fabric that can go with it. I think I'll cut solids for the charm squares and see if this can work. I guess this means I'll be quilting along!
I am really excited about making this quilt. I have so many charm packs that I think I will use what I have. I just need to get the solids. Shopping is always so much fun!!
What a great quilt-a-long Jennifer! Count me in! I just gave away my last charm pack ... so I think a shopping trip may be in order :)
I like the design a lot. Will raid my stash to get ready...
I'm going to give it a try too. Sounds like fun! I'm new to the whole process though, so bear with me :-).
So glad I am not too late! I just saw the notice on Flicker and since I have been asleep on-line lately I had no idea how long ago you had started!
I think I may see how many i-spy squares I can come up with that are funky from a swap last year and use them!
Your quilt is going to be wonderful! Swell is such a pretty fabric line!!! Pairing it with that blue was a stroke of genius. Now I'm trying to figure out how on earth I could make some time to fit this project in....
I just found your quilt along via Craft Gossip! I'd love to take part! I have several charm packs in my cupboard. I'll check out week 2 and see if I can catch up!
I'm in! I'll post on the flickr group once I get my fabric! :D
Oh what a fun looking quilt! I still have to finish my LAST Quiltalong, but I'm going to follow along :D
Thank you for the broadcloth warning!
