Picket Fences

It took a lot to get to this finished quilt...

Remember when I told you that there are good reasons not to quilt when you are stressed and sleep deprived?
Reason #1...

Stippling while stressed leads to picking up the edge of the backing.  BIG mess.  But boy, I stippled my frustrations out through all those layers... ;)

Reason #2

Picking out the stitches to undo the mess of the backing...

Reason #3

Binding with the selvages still on and showing.  I'm choosing to call this charming and character building for this quilt...

But here's the final product and I think it's pretty awesome.  When I was going through the pictures the name "Picket Fences" came to me so that's what I'm calling this quilt.  Of course, it's inspired by Denyse Schmidt's Hop, Skip, Jump quilt but I made it without templates and it was pieced completely improvisational.

More chairs and more vintage linens...

Despite the rough goings, everything turned out perfectly.  And in my humble opinion, the selvages in the binding are pretty darn cool. :)  You can find this quilt in my shop...

What's not to love. This is gorgeous and of course there is a whole genre of quilting that only uses selvages.

I think my mom would have said, "Well, you'll probably start a trend now. Everyone will want to do the very same thing."

I, too, have stippled the flipped-over backing. I blame quilting gloves - they grip the quilt but I can't feel when I'm holding the wrong part.

Jennifer this quilt is beautiful (as usual) - and yes, the selvedges in the binding are totally cool.

I love it - the colour combination is great, something I would never have thought of. It's great that you persevered through with it and all the little things (like a selvedge in the binding) are part of the story of the quilt.

Good for you!
When asked, "Did you mean to do that?" I ALWAYS reply, "Yes, it was a DESIGN CHOICE, why do you ask??" Two things always happen. First, the person says something along the lines of, "oh, that was such a good idea, I never would have thought of that" and second, they shut up!!

But seriously, I now what you mean. Sleep deprivation and sewing can be dangerous. Glad you only had to pick out some stitches. Seen too many stories lately of people doing horrible damage to themselves with rotary cutters and running sewing machines over fingertips!

And by the by, I LOVE your DESIGN CHOICE on the binding!

Catching the back edge of the fabric happens to me even when I'm not stressed! yikes!

Love the colors on this quilt - the purple is something I would have a hard time with. Looks great!

This is way cool! And I have done the same thing several times! Maybe it is a way of focusing frustrations on something we can fix!

You will not be surprised that I find the selvages to be the perfect touch to your binding! Good design decision!
