These have been popping up all over blogland and Flickr lately and I had to try one myself.
So. Cute.
And fun to make!
I used some of my Flea Market Fancy scraps and combined them with natural linen. The two textures go nicely together and give it a real feeling of utility... this is made to be used!
If there is a new quilting technique you have been wanting to try, this is a great way to do it. This mug rug measures 9" x 9" so it's an awesome canvas. I did straight line quilting in a random grid layout which isn't new to me. But what I have been wanting to try is a completely machine stitched binding. It was easy and I'm pretty happy with the results. :)
I backed it with Denyse Schmidt home decor fabric and I included a layer of Insul-Bright with the batting to make this heat safe too.
Just writing this post makes me want to go drink hot tea! Too bad it's going to be in the 90's here today. I keep telling myself that fall just has to be around the corner. I think I'm going to go turn the air conditioning down, turn football on and quilt. Quilting and football... this is definitely one of my favorite times of year. :)
P.S. If you love this as much as I do, it's in my shop...

I love it and the fabric, flea market fancy is gorgeous, pity it's so hard to get hold of now. An ideal project to try out quilting and nice and small for the novice quilter like me :)
Very cute! Your machine binding looks very nice.
This is really cute. I have never seen one. Have a British friend who drinks a lot of tea and might really enjoy one! My binding done on the machine never looks that good. I just do it by hand now.
So cute! I love that little pocket!
I'm not normally a tea drinker, but some of my friends are and this would make a superb gift. Wow, your binding looks awesome, and what a great project to try it on. Sighing, with longing, on those great FMF scraps (why, oh, why can't I get that fabric line out of my brain??). Yeah, anyway....
This is a great project, Jennifer. Thanks for sharing it.
Such a great job Jennifer! Love the combination of the linen and the FMF. Did you use a tutorial for the machine binding? I've been wondering about it too - particularly for small projects like this one. Danielle x
I love your tea mat. The fabrics are great and I love the pocket. This would be a great project for me to try that machine binding on. Thanks for the idea.
Adorable!!! I'm totally addicted to making these things! :) Nothing satisfies that need to finish a project quite like it! :)
ohh its gorgeous!!.. I must ask you... where do you get your linen... ive been searching and cant seem to find any xx
I'm going to have to try starght line quilting, and you're right - this is the perfect canvas. I've been making this size quilt to put under lamps, etc (think doilies in their heyday). They're perfect for a little splash of color - and they're quick...
I love the pocket for the spoon! Great idea!
Eeeek! That's just cute as can be! What a fun idea!
What a great idea. I love everything you do.
